Wandering in Waterberg

A self-drive safari can be a lot of fun, especially if you are of a spontaneous and independent nature.  The one downside for the very active self-driver is the amount of time strapped inside a car.  While it is great fun driving yourself around on safari, it can be difficult to spend more time wandering on foot.  With this thought and a numb bum, we made certain we allowed enough time to wander in the bush (when there was less chance of human predators around)!

Waterberg Plateau is a high red sandstone plateau between Windhoek and Etosha National Park.  Of all the incredible places we visited in Namibia this was the most spell-binding.  Why?  Not only is this place a refuge for rare and endangered African animals, in comparison to much we had experienced, it felt lush, green, fresh.

The klipspringer is not found all over because it loves to dance on rocks and cliff faces.  If you look closely it appears as if standing on its toes like a ballerina.

Waterberg Plateau is home to two of Africa’s rarest antelopes, the Sable and Roan. The sable antelope, according to a travelling companion who farms these animals (to sell to other game parks), are very docile and easy prey.

The White Rhinoseros is another refuge species here on the plateau.  We were fortunate enough to witness a mother and calf, as well as these two handsome young men.  They got quite excited by our presence and thought they’d have some fun, by charging our safari vehicle!  Not sure what dance they were performing for us prior to their charge…

Apart from the animals and incredible sunrises, Waterberg Plateau has fascinating rock formations and colours.

This incredible place brought our Namibian adventure to a close.   This is not to say we will never be back, but there are so many other places we hear calling our name, so many other places to have an adventure.
