Slow in the fast lane

The cobblestone streets reflect the ambient light, sent down into the small alleyways by way of the walls and windows.  People amble by. Mopeds speed past.  All in a city who’s pace is slow and fast, all at once.  Stopping for a caffe is obligatory, driving fast is a way of life.

imageToday is my first day in Rome, the eternal city.  The old meeting the new has me mesmerised and constantly looking left and right.  But the best way I feel I can appreciate this city and make the most of my time here is to go slow.  I am now sitting in circus cafe, in an alley somewhere in the historic centre (Will figure out where I am when I am ready to go back to my accommodation). I have yet to rush to the sights, the tourist traps and souvenir stores, but it is difficult to avoid them, they are everywhere!

imageAs I wander the streets and alleyways, other tourists also wander everywhere, alone or in large groups, maps out and looking about. Dogs follow their owners to work, jump on scooters with them or sit quietly by as caffe and small talk are consumed.

Taking it slow feels mandatory.  It feels right.  I am taking the time to just appreciate.

Erin.
